As a result of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, each US resident is entitled to one free copy of their credit report from EACH credit reporting agency once every twelve months. You shouldn't have to pay for them! The credit reporting companies rake in lots of money each year and it costs them almost nothing to generate a credit report from their automated systems. Make a list of all the credti reporting agencies and plan on requesting your free credit report once a year at different times. This allows you to check your credit score and credit history several times a year and not just once. If you have 4 credit reporting agencies then you can get 4 credit reports each year with one every 3 months. This is a great way to stay current with the status of your credit score and not have to pay a dime in any fees for something that should be free to start with.
